After severing ties with the Polisario in June 2019, El Salvador is now set to deepen its relationship with Morocco. Salvadoran Vice President Felix Ulloa made the announcement following his meeting with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita on Sunday in Quito, on the sidelines of the inauguration of Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa.

Discussions focused on the possibility of opening a Salvadoran consulate in Laayoune, marking a significant step toward recognizing Morocco's sovereignty over the region. Vice President Ulloa reiterated El Salvador’s support for the Kingdom’s territorial integrity and expressed interest in enhancing cooperation on issues of mutual concern.

In November 2022, Ulloa paid a working visit to Morocco, where he met with the presidents of both parliamentary chambers as well as Foreign Minister Bourita.

Three years after breaking ties with the Polisario, El Salvador opened its first embassy in Morocco in October 2022.
