Marrakech police detain migrant after assault on local official during public space clearance

Police Marrakech have arrested an undocumented migrant from sub-Saharan Africa after he assaulted a local authority official, during a public space clearance operation.

According to the newspaper Assabah, the incident took place in the Prince Moulay Rachid passage, where the official was accompanying a local authority committee in a campaign targeting the illegal occupation of public spaces by street vendors.

Sources reported that the assailant, who was among those violating the regulations, refused to comply with the authorities’ directives and responded violently. He attempted to intimidate members of the campaign and struck the official multiple times.

The incident prompted a rapid response from security and local officials, who managed to apprehend the individual on the spot. He was taken to the police station for questioning and remains in custody, pending his appearance before the public prosecutor for appropriate legal action.
