Spanish police have arrested two Moroccan nationals at the Spain-Gibraltar border after uncovering a large sum of undeclared cash during a routine vehicle check at the La Línea crossing, reports Spanish media.

The car, which bore Gibraltar number plates, was stopped by Policia Nacional officers, who proceeded to search the vehicle and found banknotes concealed in various compartments and among the passengers’ personal belongings. The two Moroccans were leaving Spain and trying to enter Gibraltar.

In total, officers seized €50,545 in euro notes, along with £305 in sterling and 16,890 Moroccan dirhams—amounting to roughly €1,600 at current exchange rates.

The two travellers reportedly offered no convincing explanation for carrying such large amounts of undeclared money. Under Spanish and EU regulations, travellers are required to declare amounts exceeding €10,000 when crossing borders.

The entire sum was confiscated as authorities opened an investigation to determine the origin and intended use of the money.
