The U.S. State Department has updated its travel advisory for Americans planning to visit Morocco. The update, issued on April 21, places the Kingdom under a Level 2 advisory, urging U.S. citizens to «exercise increased caution».
With minor revisions, the advisory now emphasizes the need for heightened vigilance due to the threat of «terrorism».
«Terrorist groups continue plotting possible attacks in Morocco», the advisory states, warning that «terrorists may attack with little or no warning. They target tourist locations, transportation hubs, markets, shopping malls, and local government facilities».
American tourists are also advised to «stay alert in tourist areas and avoid demonstrations and large crowds».
It is worth noting that in February, Moroccan authorities dismantled a terrorist cell linked to ISIS's Sahel branch that was plotting a series of attacks in the country. The operation led to the arrest of 12 individuals and the seizure of a cache of weapons and ammunition.
